It was a relatively quiet January window for Liverpool, which it was bound to be, considering how heavily they invested during the last summer. The only major addition came in the form of Rennes’ centre-back Jeremy Jacquet. The Frenchman agreed to join the Reds under a pre‑contract deal that will see him complete the remainder of the season with the Ligue 1 side and move to Anfield at the end of the campaign.

The defending champions have definitely not lived up to expectations this season. Firstly, due to injury concerns. Secondly, the majority of the summer additions initially had trouble settling in and fully integrating into the team. But over time, they’ve progressed, and as of right now, Liverpool are in sixth place as they strive to qualify for the Champions League. They might already be putting plans in place for future signings though.

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are believed to have taken early steps by holding preliminary discussions with Kees Smit’s representatives earlier this year. On the other hand, Arsenal are already mapping out a possible move for the summer of 2026.

Liverpool and Arsenal are not the only ones keeping an eye on Smit. Manchester United and Real Madrid are believed to be interested in the Dutch midfielder as well.

Smit’s rise in the Eredivisie has been swift and eye-catching. The Dutchman is adept at dominating play from deep while also driving forward with the ball, and has established himself as a key player for AZ Alkmaar. He has scored 3 goals and provided 5 assists in 31 appearances across all competitions this season.

AZ Alkmaar are believed to be looking for around €60 million to part with Smit, but that figure is expected to rise and could reach upto €75 million in the summer, as he is being followed by some of Europe’s top clubs. The financial disparity gives Premier League sides a clear edge over European rivals such as Real Madrid.
