Liverpool are going through a difficult period both on and off the field. On one hand, they have to failed to deliver consistent performances over long periods of time. On the other hand, the club is also dealing with a number of injuries to key players.
Recently, Jeremie Frimpong joined the list of sidelined players after suffering a knee injury during Liverpool’s matchup against Qarabag FK. With the Reds’ alternative right-back option Conor Bradley also injured, the club are caught in two minds over whether to bring in someone new before the winter transfer window closes or wait until the summer for better options.
Well, it seems like Liverpool are opting for the former, as reports have emerged suggesting that the Reds have held talks for a Serie A defender and could sign him before February 2.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed on his official YouTube channel (via Football Fancast) that Liverpool have discussed the signing of Denzel Dumfries with Inter Milan following the recent crisis at the back. The Italian journalist stated:
“Liverpool today had a conversation with Inter. A club-to-club conversation with Inter. Very good relationship.
“So, from what I’m told, Liverpool asked about the situation of Denzel Dumfries. The release clause is not valid in January. The release clause, around €20–25m, is only valid in the summer.
“But the understanding on this story is that Liverpool have asked about the player and the injury situation.”
Liverpool hold talks with €25m Serie A defender for emergency move
Dumfries could be a good option for Liverpool, having already played for some top clubs in his career. He is a regular part of Inter Milan’s squad when fit. So far this campaign, the 29-year-old has appeared in 15 matches and scored three goals as well.
Nevertheless, the problem with Dumfries is that he is also prone to injury and has already missed a significant number of matches this season. As a result, there are question marks over whether it would be wise to jump the gun and sign the Dutch player immediately.
It’s true that the Reds are in a bit of a sticky situation, but they should still think twice before proceeding with this deal due to Dumfries’ known fitness issues.
Anyway, whichever path Liverpool choose, they will have to act quickly as there isn’t much time left before the transfer window closes. For now. let’s just wait and watch how this situation unfolds in the next few days.
