Haaland is off to an incredible start to the new season. He has already netted 14 goals in just 10 appearances across all competitions for Manchester City. In the latest matchup against Aston Villa, he scored twice in a 2-0 victory for his club.
The Norwegian is undoubtedly the best natural number nine in the world right now by a fair margin. However, sometimes it feels like the player is not getting the recognition he deserves, especially in terms of the Ballon d’Or rankings.
Haaland ended last season with 34 goals. Although it is true that Manchester City failed to win any major trophy in the said campaign, a tally of over 30 goals should have been enough to place him in the top twenty. Instead, he was ranked 26th in the Ballon d’Or. Even in the 2023 season, he came second despite winning the treble including the Champions League and scoring an impressive total of 52 goals.
Now Marca (via Sports Witness), has reported that journalist Miguel Quintana believes there is a reason behind Haaland not being seriously considered for the coveted personal award. According to Quintana, Haaland’s role at Manchester City is actually hurting his chances of personal glory.
Journalist shares odd reason behind Erling Haaland’s Ballon d’Or troubles
Haaland joined Manchester City in the summer of 2022 and has since become an undisputed part of Pep Guardiola’s attack. He has already won multiple trophies with the club, and fans hope for many more in the coming years.
City have a contract with the Norwegian until 2034. A number of clubs, especially Real Madrid, have shown interest in him and are keeping an eye on a possible future move. However, the Citizens are determined to keep their superstar for years to come.
Quintana’s claim that Haaland is at a disadvantage simply because he plays for Manchester City does not seem convincing. Rodri won the Ballon d’Or last year while at the same club. So it is entirely possible for the 25-year-old striker to achieve the same while staying at the best club in England. Haaland is off to a great start this season, so perhaps this could be his year. You never know.
