Manchester United’s current season has been a mixed bag so far, with the team sitting on 10th in the premier League with 10 points from 7 matches. One one hand they’ve had some impressive wins, like their 2-1 win over Chelsea, but on the other hand they were handed some disappointing losses as well, including a shock defeat to Grimsby Town in the EFL cup.

The team’s top scorers so far are the captain himself Bruno Fernandes and their newest singing Benjamin Sesko, with 2 goals each. Despite some bright moments, the Red Devils inconsistency has been a major concern, with manager Ruben Amorim facing pressure to deliver better results.

The club’s star player Fernandes has had a slow start to the 2025-26 season judging by his standards. As the club captain, he has played a crucial role in team’s midfield, but his form hasn’t been consistent. That said, he is still the team’s top goal scorer along with Sesko as previously mentioned and his leadership qualities have also been praised on multiple occasions.

Anyway, recently reports have emerged claiming that the Portuguese international, who has been a key player for Manchester United since joining the club from Sporting CP in January 2020 could be sold as part of a major overhaul in the 2026 summer transfer window.

According to former chief scout Mick Brown, who spoke with Football Insider and said:

“I don’t think they’re ruling anything out,”

“Let’s assume they’re ninth, tenth, around mid table come the end of the season and it doesn’t look like they’re going to achieve anything, they might not have a choice.

“If an offer of around £100million comes in for Fernandes, they might decide it’s time to cash in.

“It’s certainty something that will be tempting for them, that amount of money.

“Then they could go and look at some of their targets to strengthen the squad with that money coming in, because it’s an area they feel they could improve.”

Meanwhile the midfielder has expressed openness to leaving Manchester United in case the club decides to cash in on him, though he had previously turned down a lucrative offer from Al-Hilal, who have reportedly offered him a four-year deal worth $21 million per year.

If Fernandes does leave, Manchester United reportedly plans to replace him with another Sporting CP player, Pedro Gonclaves, who is 26 years old midfielder currently valued at $80 million.

Anyway, these are just speculations at this point, and there are a lot of ifs and buts involved. For now, the club must focus on the current season and try to get some back-to-back wins under their belt.
