Manchester City and Real Madrid have shared a number of memorable matches in the Champions League in recent years. They are inarguably two of the best football teams in the world right now. Meanwhile, apart from their battles on the pitch, these two European giants have also been involved off it.

During the summer transfer window, there were rumours linking several players from both clubs switching sides. Among them, Manchester City’s superstar Rodri’s name was also thrown in the pit, with reports suggesting that Los Blancos were interested in securing the services of the Ballon d’Or winner to strengthen their midfield.

That said, the City fans could finally breathe a sigh of relief regarding Rodri’s future as it appears they will be able to enjoy a few more years of the defensive midfielder’s brilliance if reports are to be believed.

Defensa Central (via TeamTalk) have revealed that Real Madrid’ President Florentino Perez has decided to abandoned Los Blancos’ pursuit of Rodri following the player’s latest injury.

He views the deal as “a high-risk operation due to the player’s physical condition” and also from a financial standpoint, given the high cost involved. Perez has further stated “It’s almost impossible for that opinion to change.”

Rodri has been an undisputed starter for Manchester City whenever he is available. He is the powerhouse of the midfield, breaking down attacks, filling spaces, and controlling the tempo of the game. The Spanish international is undoubtedly the best defensive midfielder in the world right now.

However Rodri has suffered from injuries recently and has spent some time on the sidelines. That said, the 29-year-old is currently fully fit and has already made seven appearances this season, including two in the Champions League.

All things considered, there is really no reason why Manchester City would have entertained any offers from Real Madrid for the Spanish international. Moreover, the Citizens are going through a period of transition in midfield following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne and couldn’t have afforded losing another one of their stars. So the news that Los Blancos have dropped their plans to pursue Rodri is certainly a welcome one for City fans.
