Tottenham Hotspur had an eventful summer transfer window, signing a number of new players including Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus, Mathys Tel, and Kevin Danso, among others.
However, the club also missed out on some of their targets, including Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo. The 25-year-old has been making headlines regularly with his performances for the Cherries.
Tottenham reportedly held talks with the Ghanaian international this summer over a potential move, but a deal failed to materialise. It was widely believed that Spurs would make another attempt to sign the player in the next major transfer window.
However, it appears that Tottenham’s hopes of securing the forward have taken a major setback. That is according to former Everton chief Keith Wyness who speake on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast and said:
“He might be thinking about an overseas move, those are the whispers I’m hearing. I think that he could be going somewhere like Spain or Italy. I don’t see him making that move in the Premier League.”
Tottenham handed serious blow in their pursuit of the £75m player
Semenyo recently signed a contract extension with Bournemouth that runs until 2030. To make matters more difficult for Spurs, the player is reportedly looking to a move to Spain or Italy. Bournemouth have set a price tag of about £75 million for the player.
In addition to Tottenham, both Manchester clubs, Liverpool, and Chelsea are also said to be interested in the Ghanaian. So even if he decides to remain in the Premier League, securing his signature won’t be an easy task.
That said, Tottenham did manage to beat strong competition to sign both Simons and Kudus, two players who were on the radar of several top clubs. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if, despite the setbacks and rumours, Spurs manages to pull this one off as well.
Anyway, the next summer transfer window is still far away, and there’s a whole season to play before then. Tottenham have made a strong start to their Premier League campaign, currently sitting in third place. They should prioritise maintaining their form and building consistency for now. The rest can wait for the moment.
