It could not be better news if Liverpool pursued their target of bringing in a centre-back in the upcoming winter transfer window. After suffering two consecutive losses in the Premier League recently, it has become quite evident that the team needs a defensive shakeup.
Although managing this alarming situation of the Reds has posed difficulties lately, it needs to be addressed as early as possible. Meanwhile, a slight hope has emerged as Joe Gomez is believed to be nearing fitness and is about to join his full-time training soon, while the management is also in talks with Ibrahima Konate about extending his contract, which runs out next summer.
However, fear still persists as both have their injury history and could be prone to future setbacks. So, the signing of a centre-back could be a crucial addition for the Reds to defend their title. They had been on the verge of signing Marc Guehi late in the summer before a last-minute collapse.
According to Anfield Watch, Bild reports that Liverpool are in the mix to sign French international centre-back Dayot Upamecano from Bayern Munich.
Liverpool Target Upamecano to Bolster Defensive Lineup in Winter
The Frenchman is nearing the end of his contract next summer, and with Liverpool missing out on signing Guehi from Crystal Palace, they could turn their attention elsewhere.
The Frenchman’s defensive and tactical prowess, along with his leadership skills, would bring a nice balance alongside Virgil van Dijk in the long run. Thoug any addition in the defence could be a lifesaver for the Reds right now, it would be a cherry on top if they were able to bring in someone of Upamecano’s quality.
However, joining the race for Upamecano would be nowhere near an easy task, but building the defensive lineup with him could bring future accomplishments, as he also holds extensive experience of playing top level football for both club and country.
