Barcelona announce starter needs surgery, ruled out for several weeks

Barcelona have made a pretty good start to the season, but it is Real Madrid who have set the pace early on. Despite Xabi Alonso’s experimental and unsettled playing XI, they have been successful in winning all of their La Liga games so far and top the table as a result, two points ahead of Barca.

So, Barcelona will be looking to keep pace with and eventually overtake their El Clasico rivals. But unfortunately, they have been handed a major blow this early in the season.

The goalkeeping situation has been a problem for Barcelona in recent years but it had looked like they had solved that by signing Joan Garcia. While that might still be the case in the long run, in the short term, they will have to shake things up between the posts once again.

That is because Garcia has suffered an injury and will be out for a while. As confirmed by Barcelona’s official website, the goalkeeper has suffered a ruptured medial meniscus in his left knee. He will undergo an arthroscopic procedure and is expected to be out for around 4-6 weeks, depending on his recovery.

It was earlier this summer that Barcelona completed the signing of Garcia and he has managed to impress since his arrival. He has immediately established himself as a starter for the Catalan giants and put in some pretty good performances.

So, this injury has come at the wrong time for him. We wish him a speedy and successful recovery. There is no doubt that Garcia will be back on the pitch soon, doing what he does best, which is preventing the opposition attackers from scoring goals against Barcelona.

Until then, Barcelona need to find a solution. The last thing they can afford to do right now is drop points and allow Real Madrid to further extend their lead at the top.
